Kawamura Ryuichi was born in Yamato, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan, on May 20th, 1970.
He is best known for his act as lead singer for the band Luna Sea in which he was active from 1989 to 2001.
The band Luna Sea was originally formed by J and INORAN, and a while later Ryuichi joined the band as well.
When they first started out Ryuichi got himself the stage name RAYLA, which he later changed back to Ryuichi as they became more popular.
When Luna Sea was first formed, the band was called Lunacy. They debuted on a stage called Machida Playhouse, which could host up to 100 people, this was on May 29, 1989.
They later released their first demo that included songs such as Kille me, Sexual and Nightmare, it was released on 100 copies and all of them sold out.
Three months later they released their second demo which included Shade, Search for Reason and Suspicious, this one released in 1000 copies and this time again, it sold out completly.
In December the same year they played their first 'real' concert at Machida Playhouse and all, 150, tickets were sold out.
When Lunacy was discovered by Hideto Matsumoto, hide of X, in 1991, he signed them up to X's company Extasy Records.
Soon after they released their first, self-titled, album. As their first album was released they changed their name from Lunacy to Luna Sea.
Luna Sea then later signed to Sweet Child lable and held their first live tour titled, "Under the New Moon Episode I-III"
When Luna Sea played at Nippon Budokan with Extacy Summit they started to gain more and more populatiry.
In 1997 Luna Sea announced that they would go on a one year break so that the memberd could be able to 'take care of' their own solo projects.
When Ryuichi started his solo career he did a sudden change.
In stead of the usual rock he used to sing with Luna Sea, now he focused more on pop and ballad sounds.
He released 4 singles, one mini-album and one full leinght album in 97.
The release of his album Love was a big hit, it debuted as number 1 on the Oricon weekly album chart and sold around 1,021,000 copies. making him one of the only male solo artists to have sold over one million copies within one weeks time.
In total his album Love sold over 2,788,000 copies on the Oricon charts.
When Luna Sea disbanded in 2000, Ryuichi held his first solo tour.
He later composed the music for the movie "So Faraway".
He opened his fanclub RKF in mid 2001.
In 2002 Ryuichi starred with a lead role in the TV Asahi drama "Kowloon de Aimashou" as well as writing the ending theme titled "Sugar Lady".
In 2005 Ryuichi, together with former band mate INORAN, formed the band Tourbillion, they released two albums and one single and after that nothing more has been heard of that band.
Though it is not officially disbanded.
Ryuichi is currently married to former Miss Japan (2002) Kumi Sano, and have been since January 23, 2006.
The couple was introduced to eachother by a mutual friend in early 2005.
One June 18, 2009 Kumi gave birth to their first son.
As a hobby, Ryuichi often car race together with his very good friend INORAN.
He also enjoy boxing and surfing, and has said that when he retires from music he will "Open a surfing applience store".
